There’s a chance that the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi could be expanded, and the Corpus Christi City Council is considering the steps necessary to make the expansion. The aquarium reportedly needs $50 million in funding for a new Caribbean Journey exhibit – a 65,000 square foot addition that could create more than 40 jobs when it opens in 2017.
But in order to secure the means necessary for the expansion, ownership of the Texas State Aquarium may need to shift from the City of Corpus Christi to the Texas State Aquarium Association. Considering the fact that the aquarium already has around a $43 million economic impact on Corpus Christi and the surrounding area, the City Council may very well decide to do what is needed to ensure funding for the aquarium expansion.
