Tar balls from the oil spill that closed the Houston Ship Channel last week has littered the beaches of Matagorda Island and on the northern shores of San Jose Island near Aransas Pass, state officials said after an aerial inspection of the spill area. Cleanup crews were set to arrive at San Jose Island on Saturday, Port Aransas officials said. The location of the tar balls were confirmed by an aerial inspection by the Texas General Land Office and by ground inspections by researchers at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, local officials said.
The spill of nearly 170,000 gallons of oil occurred after a barge and an oil tanker collided in the ship channel.
